Tawa Swords - affiliated with Swords Point

Tawa Swords Club, part of the Swords Point group, offers coaching in all weapons: foil, epee and sabre. We are able to cater to fencers of all ages, abilities and interest levels from wanna-be pirates (they will be tamed somewhat) to serious competitive levels. Under -9s can participate in 5-week block courses each term. We have equipment available for use by fencers while they are deciding whether to take up the sport. We welcome enquiries from everyone. Fencers in the Swords Point group are welcome to attend foil sessions at either club.

Fencing is a fun sport that involves a combination of mental, physical and temperamental challenges. Our Club is very friendly and there is a strong commitment by coaches and senior fencers to ensure that fencers understand that even a combat sport like fencing depends on an awareness of others’ reactions and a degree of “cooperation” if one is to succeed and “have the last word” in this “physical argument.

Susan is an experienced coach and classroom teacher. She holds a current Teaching Certificate and an up-to-date First Aid Certificate. For fifteen years she was Head Coach at Hutt Valley Fencing Club a club which she established, financed and supported with her husband’s assistance. Susan developed that club to be the largest and one of New Zealand’s most successful. Susan has now left HVFC and established clubs based in Lower Hutt and Tawa. She focusses on Under-15 year olds, giving them an excellent grounding in fencing. She has a reputation as someone who also helps students develop personal skills such as cooperation with a partner and within a group, self-belief and overcoming the fear of failure by pushing oneself to do one’s best. Fencing appeals to many physically unmotivated students and her students learn to find pleasure in physical activity. She has a high retention rate of pupils. She has trained a number of referees and is responsible for coaching a number of New Zealand champions from school age to Senior level, several Oceania Champions and Commonwealth Junior medallists.

Susan’s involvement in fencing spans 53 years. She and her husband are committed to fencing and to fencers. Susan has been:

  • Wellington and National Representative for foil at all levels from school age to senior
  • Senior Wellington Regional Champion and also Senior NZ Women’s Foil Champion and NZ Veteran Foil Champion
  • Commonwealth Veteran Women’s Foil Silver medallist
  • Member of Oceania Champion Women’s Epee Team
  • Wellington President for Fencing Central and served as committee member for many years
  • Delegate for FeNZ at various times since 1977
  • President of FeNZ
  • Fencing representative on the NZ Olympic Committee

Victoria University of Wellington Swords Club

VUW has a long and proud history of fencing. The first fencing club, the Women's Epee Club, was started in 1910. Over the next 34 years a few fencing clubs were established with the last one being VUW Swords in 1944, the last year of WWII. We have provided both the University Population and the Community with the opportunity to partake in the exciting sport of Fencing.

We are a university based club that trains fencers of all levels of ability and welcome both university students and members of the community to learn the art of fencing at social or competitive level.

Our goal is to enable people to learn (from beginners to advanced) the sport of Fencing.

Beginners can use club gear and participate socially as well as in competitions, if they affiliate as competitors.

Hutt Valley Fencing Club

Hutt Valley Fencing Club is a not-for-profit organisation and incorporated society, run by a committee of volunteers and a team of senior and junior volunteer coaches dedicated to the sport. We are affiliated through Fencing Central to Fencing New Zealand, the body responsible for all fencing in New Zealand.

These are our key objectives:

  • To promote the sport of fencing
  • To make the sport more accessible through providing the equipment and by keeping the membership fees as low as possible without compromising on safety
  • To provide a safe, inclusive and fun club environment for people of all ages to enjoy fencing, socially or competitively.
  • To collaborate with the other fencing organisations to develop opportunities for our fencers, junior coaches and referees.
Most importantly we want our members to have FUN!

Hutt Valley Fencing Club fencers compete regularly in local, national, and international competitions. Each year we have a number of young fencers travel to competitions in Australia. Great fun and experience.

You're welcome to come along for a free tryout.

Head Coach

Robert Gastaldo-Brac

Robert grew up in the UK and started fencing at the age of 14; soon after he was the Hertfordshire U16 Champion.  That was in the mid 70’s, and Robert has been involved in fencing in one form or another his entire life.  He captained the London Team against Counties (“the rest”) in 1983, fenced for Salle Allen and the London Polytechnic Teams, represented London at foil and fenced in tournaments all over Europe.

Robert has been a coach in New Zealand since 1985. In 1987 he attended the Olympic Solidarity Coaching and Fencing Course.  He coached at Upper Hutt College, Marsden School, Victoria University and Wellington High School, where he coached juniors as well as international level fencers.

The list of his credentials and contributions to the sport is extensive:

  • a fencing referee for over 25 years,
  • Wellington and National Representative for foil,
  • fencing representative on the NZ Olympic Committee,
  • previously Wellington President for Fencing and served as Treasurer over the years,
  • National Treasurer for FENZ at various times (20+ years)
  • Manager on National and International trips
  • Manager for NZ Commonwealth Champs (Newcastle 2002, Aus)
  • Tournament Organiser.

Robert was taught by the best of British fencing: Mike Law, Derek Allen, Roy and Angela Goodall (fencing and coaching training) and legendary Hungarian Master Coach Bela Imregi, who produced many world-class champions.

Upper Hutt Fencing Club

In 2002 UHFC was founded by Mihai Ifrim, a former teacher of Upper Hutt College. As former students, friends and mentees of his, a group of us aim to continue the legacy and maintain what is a national championship winning club.  The club is now headed by Bryan "Baz" Clark and his team of Coaches.

The club has an outstanding record of producing some of the fittest and most enthusiastic fencers in the country with many fencers at the club holding both regional, national and oceanic titles.

The club prides itself on our sportsmanship, commitment and team spirit.

By getting involved in Fencing at UHFC students build a variety of skills, some of these include: balance, coordination, fitness, discipline, mental stamina, team work, leadership and interpersonal skills that will be with them for much of their life.

It is a sport that can develop you in many ways and can ultimately provide a hobby for life.
